Been seeing some bikes running asphault with no filters does anyone know if this is worth any gains in power it doesn't seem like it would be worth the extra wear on an engine especially when we have such long filters available

I wouldn't risk it. K&N's don't rob much at all. Well worth the added security.

They dont rob much hp at all, they do however give a slight bit of vacuum making jetting and fuel delivery more consistent. Believe it or not you dont even need those huge long filters on most motors.

Yeah I run the long ones because they sent me the wrong ones , I've taken the outterwears off once and the bike sputtard the whole pass I was curious if I changed the jetting if it would pick up any speed

In most cases filters hurt power on mod engines with big carbs, Streetfighter- removing outerwear will increase airflow and therefore draw more fuel causing a richer condition.

On my big single, I was running a 4" diameter 6" long K&N w/ outerwear. You could actually see the outerwear get sucked to the filter & it appeared the filter was trying to collapse on it's self. Now i'm working on a filter bracket to install a larger automotive cone style or perhaps turbo diesel filter.

I guess I was thinking backwards in that with the added air flow I would need to fatten it up , but it makes sense that the sputter was probably from it being to rich . I thought it was getting more fuel draw because of the added restriction and was worried about it leaning out

If your air filter is robbing power your running the wrong ones.

Hard to believe 12" filters robbing power on a stock jug but it's possible. I guess I'll get out there and try some smaller and then try none at all and see what happens to the ET and mph . So you guys think if I pull um off and it sputters to close on the pj ?

We dyno tested a few months ago testing filter theory. On a 10DM going from an 8" filter to a 12" filter gained 3 HP. Same comparison has been made on a few smaller motors since and has shown a 1-3 HP gain. Outerwears are nice for that added dirt restriction, but rob another HP or so on the dyno. I personally have found that when an outerwear is put on an oiled filter, the oil tends to clog the outerwear and greatly restricts flow. Many times an outerwear on a non oiled filter seems to be the answer...just make sure you always keep them very clean. We personally run an oiled filter, no outerwear. Now will these gains get you a huge gain at the track, no, but every little bit adds up.

Lastly, before you go pulling any fuel away at all I would do some plug checks! :D

From the testing i've done its not the length of the air filter its how close the back of the air filter is to the carb. All of my bikes make the same power and torque on the dyno with or without air filters. If your loosing power with air filters put a spacer on it and move it back or try a larger filter. :twocents:
